Just got back from The Pattaya License center on Highway 36 after the third renewal of my car and motorbike licenses.

I did a pre-run on Friday to see exactly what was required, and was told one Resident certificate from Immigration plus a copy. Two copies of passport, old Licenses, and that no Doctors test is required for renewal.

Went down to Immigration yesterday for Resident certificate at 8-15am.
One copy of passport, two photos and Blue book for house with copy of first two pages.

Was told I needed 2 Resident certificates, one for each license renewal, but I said I was told by the license center that only one was required with a copy. The officer said up to you, and told me to come back tomorrow to pick it up.
Explained that this was my 5th. visit to Immigration in 7 days to put a Visa stamp to new passport and to get a re-entry permit and she relented , smiled and said it would be ready in an hour.
All was done by 10am.

Arrived at the License center at 9am this morning armed with the documents stated, plus my original passport. Waited about 15 minutes to get a ticket, and then another hour to start the procedure at desk one.

There I was told it would be a 30 minute wait to take two eye tests and two reaction tests. That being done, I was told to take a seat to watch an instruction DVD.
Said this was a renewal only, and was told that this has to be done every five years. Took a seat and waited for the DVD to start and just as the opening titles were starting, was told not to watch it and go back to window one to pay and have a photo taken, LOL.
A few minutes later I had the photo taken and about fifteen minutes later was given both licenses.

Total time 2 hours 45 min and the cost was 1,060 baht.
I did this renewal 5 weeks before expiry of the old ones as I will out of the country for a few weeks at that time. Was told that if you let a five year on expire, you are back on a yearly one.

Hope this info helps.
Cheers,
Mike.

well my five year licence expired on my birthday[april 11th] and i didn't renew it until 22nd april. did all the tests and got a new one for five ywars no problem in fact it was nearly six years as it expires on 11th april 2015

Your old license can be expired up to one year & still be renewed.

A lot of people have posted on boards that your license must be expired to apply for a new one. the signs in the license office say it must not be expired to apply

Obviously both will work
LocalYokul

It can't be farther than one month from expiring, but it certainly can be expired to renew, even up to one year.
So, if you take it in there 6 weeks prior to expiring to try & renew, they probably won't let you, at least not w/o some sweet-talking.

Check the expiry date of your licence, it may not be 5 years, they only run until your nearest birthday - usually the one before the 5 years is up !!

his previous one-year license would have expired on his birthday too, so I don't see the problem.
