It seems people like in room safes, I once had some money stolen from a shit hole with a purple sign I booked last minute 6 Xmases ago and its all I could get.
Anyway why dont people like the safes and are so keen on the safes ?
I guess lots of staff have access to the safes etc. there must be overide numbers keys etc.
Whats your preference and why ?
I read somewhere safes have been ripped out ? they are usually bolted to a ply wood shelf ...
Anyone ever had theft from a in room safe ?

I like the safe room they have at The Opey De Place. Bring your own padlock for extra security. The only problem was the constant trekking up and down the stairs to dump the keys.

I was getting something out of the safe in LK Royal Suite and left the wardrobe door open to remind
me to lock it. Unfortunately the wife helpfully closed the door and I forgot. Was a bit relieved to find
the €1000, 10000 baht, passports, mobile phones, portable hard drive and camera still there.

it is not full protection but just keeps bargirls you just met out of your money while in the room. That is about it, not much protection from inside jobs or outside burglars.
Two friends of mine had money stolen from their safes in a Soi LK metro hotel last November, the owner figured out is was the maids and the he fired every maid in the place. They were not stealing all the money but only taking some of the cash out of the safe thinking guests would not notice. I can imagine many people come back drunk with a hard on and just throw the cash in the safe and are not sure how much they have. It was handled well by the owner so I won't mention the name of the place.
I keep some in the safe and hide the rest. Duct tape is used by some people to help hide cash

For me it's about convenience and peace of mind. Stayed at the Areca a while back and it was deposit boxes which was a bit of an inconvenience though not major.
Prefer in room safe but it wouldn't be much of a downer if it was deposit boxes.

I am one of the possible few who prefers the two key safes at reception. I think that in most hotels they are more secure. I just padlock my overnight cash in my suitcase while my little friend for the night is in the shower. All important items are in the hotel safe.
In the past I have stayed at Sandy Spring who have the reception safes. When I thought I had lost my key (later found) they said they would have to get the locksmith in to drill my key hole.
I have also stayed at Sunview Place that not only have reception 2 key safes but in-room small safes which are also ideal for overnight cash. But, these safes could be busted in seconds - so I remain convinced that for my passport, credit/debit cards and large amounts of cash or TCs, reception two key safes are 'safer'.

I personally prefer the safes behind reception with a 2 key lock.
The in roof safes are easily compromised by staff in the "know".

they are fine for me aslong as they can be accessed all night. otherwise you have to end up leaving some cash in the room aswell

Room safes are very convenient and you dont have to keep pestering the lobby staff and let them see your valuables. I have never been robbed from a wall safe yet. I know there are scams but I think they are rare. I tend to keep my passport in a separate hiding place away from TC's and credit cards, just for peace of mind. But since staying at Le katai for a few years, I dont even bother, as I feel that it is secure and I know all the staff.
They are great for cameras, Ipods, etc, but I couldnt fit a laptop in there.

I stayed at Tims and they had in room safes that you could lock with your own padlock.
I had a 3 number combination padlock which I used.
My valuables had never felt safer.

I like an in room safe however I am not convinced that they are secure as I am sure that the hotel staff have access to them!!!

I much prefer the inroom safe, not because of any increased security, just because if it is there you tend to use it whereas if you have to go up and down to the hotel foyer you get lazy and forget or can't be bothered.
