Cheers, just hit up google maps, seems its a tad over 400km's by road, taking into consideration all the fucking around with airports, hire cars and shit, im thinking a road trip is the easiest option.

the number 1 motorway is a straight road linking udon to khon kean and is only about 100 kms apart .
its about the same distance going to opposite way from udon to nong khai .

I have taken a more direct route North over the hills before (Kao yai ?)... think it's the 304 road up to Korat then after Korat it is a good straight road to Kon Kaen...

Population wise it is Nonthaburi for #2
Area wise Surat Thani is the second runner up.
All behind BKK of course.
When I was in Udon this last trip I was told it is just over an hour to get to KK from Udon Thani.

Sorry Mulph but it's Highway #2....... #1 is the Bkk to C.Mai road.
Fondles it's an absolute piss easy route by car........ highway 331, 304 and 2. If you like flooring it, the trip shouldn't take more than 5 hours....... I can do Udon in 5 and 'arf but thats on me bike! Just be careful from Kabin Buri to Pak Thong Chai...... fuckin police checks everywhere! However, you will find that on that stretch oncoming motorists are very good at giving you a headlight flash flash warning of a police checkpoint coming up......... something that hasn't caught on yet on the Bkk Chiang Mai route.

Some absolutely beautiful driving on highway 304 before you get to Pak Thong Chai...... up in the hills, great sweeping corners....... a lot of it has recently been upgraded and some is ongoing........ it is a good trip, but the #2 to KK is pretty boring.
Yeah, Kamphaeng Phet in 5.5 is good going....... we just did Jomtien to Chiang Mai a few weeks ago in 8.5 and that was in a diesel Fortuna 3.0 Litre........ reckon I could do it in 7.5 on the Harley.
If you wanna real fun road trip think about going cross country after you leave KK on the 12, through Lom Sak, past the Petchabun road and on toward Phitsanulok, then home down the 11...... terrific countryside all the way!
If driving between Udon and KK beware of the speed traps. They are there always. It is a good road
