PATTAYA:-- Police get tough on registration rules after bomb suspects' stay

Authorities in the popular resort city of Pattaya have stepped up security measures, as suspects in last Tuesday's bomb blasts in Bangkok were believed to have stayed there prior to the incidents.

Komsan Ekachai, governor of Chon Buri province, and Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunpleum said operators of hotels and other types of accommodation had been asked to strictly follow regulations.

Authorities found that three suspects, believed to be Iranians, stayed at a guest house in Pattaya, but the operator did not report the customers' names to local authorities within 24 hours, as required by law.

Police Maj-General Chamnong Rattanakul, chief of Chon Buri provincial police, who also oversees Pattaya, said all hotel and guest house operators would be required to cooperate with authorities and strictly abide by rules and regulations.

He suggested establishments install closed-circuit TV systems and require proper registration of all guests.

Operators must also report to authorities quickly if they have any suspicions concerning the possibility of terrorism.

"In the past, we were not strict with operators. Now, we need to work together to ensure security for everyone. The Bali bombing [of 2002] is a good example. If that happens, there will be serious economic consequences, especially a severe impact on tourism.

"Operators should pay more attention to their staff, especially their housekeepers and security personnel, who must help authorities monitor potential suspects and help prevent untoward incidents," Chamnong said.

"Potential terrorists will not stay in big hotels, but will choose to stay in small places such as guest houses in order to avoid strict security regulations," he said.

Meanwhile, Foreign minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said it was not yet possible to seek the extradition of a bomb suspect from Malaysia to Thailand.

At this stage, Malaysian authorities have not filed formal charges against the suspect, who is believed to have fled from Thailand to Malaysia following the drama in Bangkok last week.

However, Malaysian authorities said they would fully cooperate with their counterparts in Thailand in this case. The suspect was arrested while attempting to leave Malaysia for Iran.

Earlier, the Israeli government accused Iran of being behind the bomb incidents in Bangkok, saying its top diplomat was among the targets.

Israel also stated that the bombs used in Bangkok were manufactured at the same site as those used in recent incidents in India and Georgia.

However, the Iranian diplomatic mission in Bangkok has denied Iran's involvement in the bomb incidents.

No one was killed in the Bangkok blasts - in Sukhumvit 71 - but one of the suspects lost his legs after one bomb reportedly hit a tree and bounced back close to him.

So the local BIB could have prevented the Bangkok bombings if they had only had the registered names of these terrorist given to them while the bad guys were staying in Pattaya?

Could also be interpreted as they saying the guesthouse and hotel workers should be looking thru their guests belongings and report anything suspecious to the local BIB ?

The Tourist Police done the rounds of the bars in Udon a few days ago asking for customers to keep an eye out for Iranians as there are supposed to be American servicemen arriving for a bit of R & R after Cobra gold.

The only Iranians I have met look western anyway so how do you tell?

I'm sure the BIB would have caught the bombers in Pattaya if the guesthouse had reported their presence because under the headings under occupation in their passports it would have said terrorist bomber, naah..even with that they probably still would'nt of caught them,

I am wondering whether this group were acting alone ?

I agree after the event, that it may help, but I have no idea how many Iranians are staying in Pattaya, and how many of those would be likely terrorists. The Police would have to visit every Iranian in town, whether it be a guest house of larger hotel. Almost and impossible job and I too doubt whether the BKK bombing could have been stopped

Terrorists or people who wish to carry out a terrorist attack, are not likely to draw attention to themselves and just act like holiday makers.

People and police can be vigilant to look out for suspicious activities, or unattended bags etc, but suicide bombers would be much harder to detect or deter. If the 3 intended to specifically attack an Israeli in Bangkok, then they were no specific threat to holiday makers and Thai Nationals.

I think people have to realise, that some of these groups will have different objectives and are not just all Muslims with bombs. The Bali attacks were carried out internally. for instance and tourists were the target,

God forbid if a sizeable bomb was to be detonated in somewhere like Walking Street on a busy night, anything is possible, but very hard to stop, if there is a will to do so,

I think the Iranians where probably looking to target Isreali or maybe even american targets in bangkok but most likly panicked after accidently setting of the first bomb at the house.

To me the real problem is that these guys felt comfortable in Pattaya. They look more relaxed in that picture than I felt my first 3 trips here. Must be the hooka or the comfy women. I think I'll go for a heavier than usual bargirl tonight.

Israel and the US warned the Thais back in December that Hezbollah may be planning an attacked against Israelis or Americans. The plot according to Israel was to happen around the anniversary of the killing of Imad Mughniyah. I guess the Thais detained one person at the airport as he was suspected of trying to ship bomb making supplies in and out of Thailand.
