One of the best things any foreigner can do when visiting Thailand is to learn Thai numbers. Much of Thai life in tourist areas revolves around money and negotiation skills are critical when making purchases . The system is very easy to learn and not far off from the system we use in English.

A web search will bring up several websites that are useful. Give it a try you won't regret it.

Get a Thai you can trust(difficult) to do your shopping for you, they wont get a bullshit double price from the vendor.

Always offer 50% less if they say no,just smile and walk away

Difficult and even then they're often taking a % behind your back or splitting the overcharge with the vendor.

GFs tell waitresses to add some on behind your back and rip you off something terrible when they're left to control a builder.

Sorry to generalise, but they just can't resist. Every deal is about their % for some of them.

Where are the good Links then Mike? I'd better learn to count.

One or other of them yes and they just laugh when you catch them out because they say all Thailand does it - to each other not just farang.

If they get you a quote for a job that'll be the best price there is - for them.

Yes, I'm a little jaundiced I suppose, but I've come to think it's the safest assumption.

I'm sure some must be different. http://www.pattaya-live.com/public/style_emoticons/default/whistle.gif

Some places like the clothing sellers at Mike Shopping Mall quote 3 times the going rate to get around this method :veryangry:

I love it when I'm negotiating in there and the seller won't agree to my price. I know it's a fair price and go straight next door so they can see, get the deal I want for the exact same stuff, always fun to walk back past them with 3 bags full.
